Fair Economy Platform

Massachusetts is one of the wealthiest states in the richest country in the world, but our levels of wealth inequality are staggering and inexcusable. The benefits of our economic success has been enjoyed by an ever-shrinking portion of the population. Communities of color, low-income people, and regions far from Boston lose out on economic opportunities.

Since 1968, the real value of Massachusetts’ minimum wage has dropped by 24%, forcing minimum wage earners to support their families with nearly a quarter of their income having slipped away. As large corporations like GE and Amazon profit from gratuitous tax breaks, unions are treated more and more like obstacles rather than integral parts of our economy. Small businesses too have been pushed to the margins as corporate favoritism slowly steals the air that local business owners need to breathe. We cannot allow these damaging trends to continue.

Unions have been an incredible benefit for our economy, securing workplace protections, fair working hours, and the minimum wage. More recently, unions won earned sick time on the ballot, and successfully raised the minimum wage to $15 and created a paid family medical leave program in Massachusetts.

These wins are hard-fought and important for all working families and the sustainability of our economy. But union rights continue to be under attack. From Governor Baker’s efforts to privatize state government, to the recent Supreme Court ruling weakening the power of unions to organize in Janus v. AFSCME, profiteering forces are threatening the very unions that built the middle class.

I support:
  • Labor unions, and the right to collectively bargain
  • Indexing our new $15 minimum wage to inflation, so the gains we make this year are not lost for future workers
  • Protecting our new Paid Family Medical Leave program
  • Medicare for All legislation that will lower overall healthcare costs and help our farms and small businesses budget healthcare expenses more predictably
  • Passing strong laws against wage theft
  • Ending tax breaks for multinational corporations and Fortune 500 companies that don’t create jobs in our communities
  • Investing in Western Massachusetts infrastructure, transportation, housing and small businesses to grow our regional economy
  • A progressive income tax through an amendment to the state Constitution
  • Increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) so that lower-income workers have a smaller tax burden
  • Universal pre-K, fully-funded K-12 schools, and tuition-free public higher education to help all people succeed
  • Advocating for our farms and farmers by making sure our state agencies are supportive, and by funding programs like Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) that encourage locally-sourced foods
  • Protecting our strongest-in-the-nation Pay Equity bill that ensures equal pay for equal work
  • Legislative solutions to help insulate or reverse union-busting and the Janus decision
  • Strengthening the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) to hold companies accountable for discrimination of any kind
  • Allowing drivers for Uber, Lyft, and other TNCs to unionize
  • Strengthening our unemployment insurance program
